Sustainability Q&A

Thank you for your interest in sustainability at Philips. This page offers some relevant questions asked and their answers. A more extensive Q&A is available for download at the bottom of the page.

1. What is the energy efficiency of televisions when they are on the following modes: on, off and standby?

Absolute energy consumption is mainly determined by screen size. In standby and off-mode Philips TVs consume 1W or less, and for newly introduced TVs in 2008 this will be less than 0.2W. On mode: benchmark trend overviews prove that Philips Flat TVs have an outstanding performance in on mode energy consumption.

2. Are new LCD and Plasma screens more or less efficient than traditional televisions?

When comparing, it is important to compare CRT, LCD and Plasma TVs with the same screen size.

  • In general the energy consumption increases from LCD < CRT (or traditional) < Plasma
  • CRT have gone through a energy optimization over the years, similarly it can be expected that LCD will even improve further on energy efficiency
  • Both LCD and plasma televisions have realized more than 20% energy savings over the past 4 years.

4. Why do we need electrical shavers? Isn't wet shaving more energy efficient?

Dry shaving is by far more environmentally friendly. Think of all the water, the foam, the tubes, the replacement blades, all the packaging related to wet shaving. An electrical shaver consumes only 0.5 kWh on electricity over its lifetime (often more then 10 years).
